Apr 16, 2018 To resolve this problem, configure Windows Media Player to download codecs automatically. To do this, follow these steps in Windows Media Player 11: On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Player tab, click to select the Download codecs automatically check box, and then click OK. Try to play the file. Mar 28, 2019 By default, the Windows operating system and the Player include a number of the most popular codecs, such as Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video, and MP3. However, there might be times when you want to play content that was compressed by using a codec that Windows or the Player doesn't include by default. I have seen a LOT of people having trouble with certain media files, and codec issues regarding the playing of AVI files (namely DivX Xvid AC3 for starters). I also am well aware that Windows Media Player 11 and DirectX 10 have some serious issues with regard to uninstalling, reinstalling or just trying to repair them when they get messed up. Application Tuning - Changes the default settings for Media Player Classic, NVIDIA 3D Vision Player, and Stereoscopic Player. Package Utilities: Media Player Classic Home Cinema 1.8.7 x86 - Selectable by right clicking on any file. Disc Handler - For double click playback on BluRay disc icons in Windows Explorer.

I would like to point out to review number 132 from Thomas. He mentioned Nvidia Pure video decoder in his system. I believe there is a lot to answer to the capabilities and problems of WMP 11.
I have currently removed Nvidia graphic card from my system in order to upgrade to new one and had to wait on delivery for a while as my daughter snatched mine for gaming on her system. Believe it or not my WMP11 no longer streaming video of the internet despite the fact that my system still working with its own Intel graphic chipset 946GZ or similar and provides all normal browsing with decent graphics. If all of you carefully check the Windows path in WMP 11 it leads to one of those plug-ins like Corel, Nvidia, Ati and couple others. I believe this is how it works together.
Microsoft leaving some things for others to take care of. In this instance all of those codecs and converters of files as modern Desktops and Laptops come prepacked with graphic cards. There is no need for Microsoft to extend the size of its WMP 11 to the point where it takes hours to download.
This is only an opinion with some answers for myself aswell. All the best to everyone on this forum.
Kindest regards.

Hi bootlady,
Thank you for writing to Microsoft Answers Community Forums.
All codecs make some tradeoff between sound or video quality, file size, and compatibility with non-Microsoft playback programs and devices.
To ensure the Player can try to download codecs automatically, you must have Internet Explorer 3.02 or later installed on your computer, maintain Internet access while playing the file, and your Internet security should be set to Medium. In addition, if your computer is running Windows XP Professional, or Windows Server 2003, you must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. Finally, do the following:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Player tab, select the Download codecs automatically check box.
You can also download the codec packages from Microsoft also. I am sure they will work
There are many third party codecs available on the internets which are compatible for media player 11. I suggest you search on the internet to download them. You can also check the link on supported codecs
